WESLEY S. THOMAS

“Painting is the grandchild of nature. It is related to God.” - Rembrandt van Rijn

Nature brings zeal, love and life to me. I love being out in its embrace and feel deeply, spiritually connected with the natural world around me. Though my favorite places are to be near conifer trees and mountain landscapes, I find that all of nature, in its variety and beauty, inspires and instructs me.

I was born Nov. 3, 1993 and raised in Delta, Utah. While growing up, my religion and the outdoors has had a great influence in my life. While attending high school, I had the good fortune to receive painting instruction by the renowned artist Michael Coleman in which I was given some key insight into my pursuit of painting. I was also introduced to some of the great masters at his studio, including works from Wilhelm Kuhnert, Carl Rungius, among others. I have since learned to pursue my own interests and artistic styles; I continue to relentlessly pursue the mastery of my craft and seek guidance from those that have gone before, including Ivan Shishkin, Albert Bierstadt, Peder Mork Monsted, August Leu, and others.

Though I have received art education, in the form of an associate’s degree in art, I always strive to continue my education through my own means. In many ways, I am largely self-taught by use of books, videos, and study of old masters’ paintings. My pursuit of mastery in oil painting will be a lifelong endeavor, one in which I will only strive to become better and better.

Through my art, I strive to show a connection with the sublime and divine. My relationship with God is paramount to my understanding as an artist and always seek for that to be seen in my works.
